ECAT 1MW Plant

ECAT Licensees

Leonardo Corp have a number of Licensees for its products for various regions around the world including its northern Europe Licensee Hydro Fusion Ltd, which also attended the E-Cat 1MW October test. All E-Cat Licensees have attended demos of operating E-Cat units.

A convention will be held for all E-Cat Licensees and is set for October. An official list of all licensees will then be published online here at


ECAT 1 MW Updates

One ECAT 1 MW plant has been delivered and is working in a military facility. Andrea Rossi recently made the following statement:

“The 1 MW plant has been delivered and is working in a military concern. It has been made in the USA, after the October test of the prototype made in Italy; such prototype will be delivered, with the modifications which we will complete based on what we learnt from the model at work, to a European Customer in July. ”

  • The ECAT 1 MW plant in USA is now stable at very high temperatures.

ECAT Home Updates

The development of the ECAT Home unit is progressing according to plan. An important temperature stability has been achieved in the E-Cat home unit development. The safety issues related to the E-Cat home unit running at very high temperatures are now in progress.

The certification progress is well underway and Leonardo Corp is working closely with an independent safety authority to minimize the time to certification. Leonardo Corp is now awaiting the exact requirements related to a rapid emergency shut-off system for the E-Cat home unit.

If you want to use the E-Cat like a standalone independent heating unit, you will need to connect it to a radiator through a circuit. This must be done by a professional installer, for safety reasons.

ECAT Technology Updates

Leonardo Corp and Andrea Rossi is currently working on a new reactor type with specifications far better than the previous versions of E-Cat. The canonical improvement is that the new E-Cat is now working stably at much higher temperatures than previously achieved. These temperatures allows for a vast number of electricity solutions at 40%+ gross heat-to-power efficiencies and 25%+ net efficiencies taking into account the power used by the process. The design allows for merely any heat transferring media including water/steam, heat-transferring-oils, molten salts but also hot air.

The high temperature E-Cat reactor currently in test also opens up for applications with Stirling Engines. The new reactor is smaller in size and has a charge of 1.5 grams and more shielding than the original reactor. The new progress also gives the possibility to increase the COP for industrial applications.

Currently a one month long E-Cat test is in progress as part of the new development process. Stay tuned to for the latest developments.


ECAT News update in April

Dear reader, here are the latest developments regarding the ECAT in April:

  • The ECAT is environmentally perfectly safe to use and will respect product application requirements
  • The ECAT is in the process of being certified by an independent safety authority
  • If temperature goes above allowed limit, the Nickel inside the device melts and the ECAT stops because melted Ni does expels all absorbed Hydrogen.
  • (The ECAT uses regular Nickel, thus eliminating some of the theories that rely on nano-sized particles to deal with the nuclear barrier effect)
  • Regardless of the mass of lead, the ECAT is stable up to 200 degrees Celsius.
  • In case the reactor heats by accident, the lead shield of the ECAT unit is not affected because it is isolated in an area that remains under 200 degrees Celsius all the time.
  • (Liquid lead has created problems when used as a primary fluid. It’s been tested with the ECAT, but it’s not a viable alternative, because it can generate issues such as: pump problems, condensation when the temperature goes down for any reason, etc.)
  • In case of a short blackout, the ECAT goes in self-sustained mode under the control of an electronic system.
  • In case of a longer blackout, the control system turns off the ECAT and the stopping process lasts 1 hour.
  • Currently the restart process is a manual one and can be transmitted remotely through a cell phone.
  • ECATS’s maximum temperature achievable with an optimum number of cores connected in series is today 260 degrees, potentially higher without changing phase heat vectors

ECAT 1MW Plant with 52 ecat units

Rossi is planning to set up a division to produce and sell thermal energy and adding ECAT plants to the district heating grids and later electric grids.

Various potential technologies suitable for a power-generating module for the ECAT Home device have been suggested and are in the pipeline to be tested.

  • Operate on 200 degrees C steam

Andrea Rossi ECAT – March update

Here is a summary of the latest ECAT developments made by Andrea Rossi: 

  • Andrea Rossi has developed a new design of the ECAT Home unit which is 33cm x 33cm x 6cm and can be put vertically or horizontally. Total weight is 10 kg
  • The technology is completely changed, new patents have been applied for, an intense testing program is going on with very good result
  • Leonardo Corp will defend its Intellectual Property against copycats in all necessary courts
  • The new ECAT Home unit has two simple connections for input and output of water
  • No pictures will be released until the product is for sale
  • By law a customer has 60 days of time to give back the device if unsatisfied, and Leonardo Corp give all the guarantees required by the law
  • Production capacity of new factory is one million units per year
  • The hydrogen canister has been removed and the hydrogen is now stored inside a solid material due to safety reasons
  • There is a new control system for both the ECAT Home unit and the ECAT 1MW Plant which are made from an undisclosed supplier, not National Instruments
  • The only certified places to pre-order an ECAT  are either [email protected]  and/or via the order form at
  • Certification from third party authority is in process
  • The highest temperature that could be achieved in the reactor of the domestic ECAT is just below the melting point of Nickel
  • No radiation has ever been detected outside the ECAT

  • Licenses to sell and market ECATs has been granted to licensees, not yet published
  • When Leonardo Corporation will execute the commercial strategy, the entire network of the licensees will be published
  • Andrea Rossi anticipates that an air conditioned generator and a electricity generator will eventually be suitable accessories for the ECAT
  • Siemens has shown an electricity solution for Andrea Rossi with 33% efficiency for 25MWe at 250C, 40bar and a smaller version with 30% efficiency for 5-8MWe also at 250C, 40bar in the secondary circuit

1MW Power Plants now with reduced price to reflect new technological breakthroughs


Readers of Andrea Rossi’s website Journal Of Nuclear Physics, has been asking questions lately about pricing. The initial price of the 1 MW plant was set to $2M per unit.  Now, only two months later, the price has dropped to $1,5M to reflect the success in recent developments. The large cost cut can be attributed to several factors including:

  • A close and successful collaboration with the first (still undisclosed) customer
  • New favorable and scaleable production processes
  • Strong partners within manufacturing, software and logistics

E-Cat News & Questions Weekly Digest from Andrea Rossi

Question: The expected price of the 10kW module has recently been reduced to $1500. Does this mean the 1MW plant will be cheaper as well?

Answer:  No, the 1 MW plants have a totally different technology and they have not the same economy scale. Of course, anyway we are going to cut also the price of the 1 MW plants, but not in the same mea sure. For the industrial plants ( the 1 MW plants) the price from 2012 will be around 1,500.00 US$/kW, moreless 10%. The domestic E-Cats of 10 kW will be manufactured with a different technology and with a very good economy scale, due to the fact that we have started the production of 1 million pieces; such scale, obviously, will reduce by an order of magnitude the costs. If all goes as I hope and as I am working for, the 10 kW E-Cats will cost between 100 and 150 US$/kW. I prefer to keep prices as low as possible, also to make this tech at disposal of every pocket. A revolution must be popular, to survive.

Question:How can the E-cat be installed together with my current heating solution? When do you expect the ecat version featuring both, heat and electricity supply, can be bought and installed?

Answer: We are designing to make the E-Cats fit to be applied to any existing heater. The electric power small E-Cats it will take more time. We have started the activity to produce 1 million pieces to make heat and conditioned air; this first generation will be anyway able to be retrofitted with the electric power kit, when we will have it. Now our focus will be in the first generation.

Question: How will you prove to the regulators and to the customers that this new form of nuclear energy is absolutely safe? (The physics concerning the reactions within the E-Cat are still unknown and the regulators may require safety tests spanning a period of several years to make sure that the device is absolutely safe even after many years of operation.

Answers: The physics concerning the reactions within the E-Cats are well known ( we just do not publish them for confidentiality issues) and there are patents pending for those, while the certifications are in course. We made thousands-hours tests without any radiations emitted from the reactors to the environment outside the reactors. This is very easy to be measured anyway. The reverse engineering will be, I think, impossible, due to a system we invented for this purpose, but even if somebody will succeed to do it, it will anyway be impossible for him to compete economically.

Question: When, in the period between now and autumn 2012, is expected to be submitted to the official market of the product in question?

Answer: We will do the presentation as soon as the certifications will be completed. Perhaps September.

Question: Could you tell med where the factory is located where you will manufacture the home e-cats?Can i import an e-cat from USA to Sweden this autumn, or do i have to wait until you have distribution in Sweden?

Answer: To import them you will have just to order them. If you want, you can enlist in the waiting list; I hope to be ready to deliver by next Autumn, if not it will take some more month, not years. In Sweden we will have an important concern anyway, because Sweden will be a primary place for us: probably we will produce the E-Cats for Sweden directly in Sweden.
