What is the ECAT?

The ECAT is a short form for Energy Catalyzer. It is basically a table-top fusion reactor, i.e. a fusor, that can produce nuclear size energy output at room temperature or temperatures close to room temperature.

The process utilized is called the Rossi Effect and is a proprietary of Leonardo Corporation with IP rights through the patent. A very small cylindrical reactor core (20cm x 5cm) is capable of producing kW sized output for a long duration of time (months) at negligible fuel cost.

This technology is revolutionary and the implications are vast. It will define the next era of energy production and render fossil fuels obsolete as it is cheap and 100% environmentally friendly.

The first generation of ECATs will primarily be used for heating.

Who invented the ECAT?

Andrea RossiThe ECAT was invented by the Italian engineer named Andrea Rossi who has spent his entire professional career in the energy production field.

For many years he was trying various combinations of fuels and reactor geometries until he finally discovered the Rossi Effect – a fuel combination that would yield vast amounts of excess energy for a long duration of time in a controlled fashion.

The design has been refined during the past years as a result of a fruitful cooperation with the distinguished physicist and cold fusion expert, professor emeritus Sergio Focardi of Bologna University. The Rossi Effect has been patented in the US and the IP rights belongs to Leonardo Corporation.

Andrea Rossi currently resides in the United States. See for more information on the inventor.

Where can I get an ECAT?

You can get it right here, on this site, by filling out the inquiry form and specifying what type of product you are looking for. in association with Andrea Rossi and Leonardo Corporation will then get back to you shortly regarding ECAT 1 MW Plant pre-order. ECAT Home pre-orders has yet to be decided.

The first generation of products offers two choices:

  • ECAT 1 MW Plant unit.
  • ECAT Home unit ranging from 5-10kW. (TBD, certifications pending)

How does an ECAT work?

In short, the ECAT produces the energy through The Rossi Effect which is a newly discovered process involving Lithium and Hydrogen to which Leonardo corporation holds the IP rights, see patents. This process is exothermic, which means that it produces excess energy. The mass energy of the rest product, Helium, is less than the mass energy of Lithium and Hydrogen alone and this excess energy is released as heat energy as part of The Rossi Effect.

The current design of the reactor is a small cylindrical rod with length 20cm and diameter 5 cm (external dimensions of the inner reactor core). The fuel, Lithium Aluminium Hydride + the catalyst Nickel of very fine granularity, is placed in a thin layer at the center of the reactor core. The reactor is located at the bottom of a box (the outer hull of the E-Cat is currently at a size that can easily fit on a small table) and directly attached to the reactor is cooling elements in the form of wings. These wings are crucial as they transmit the heat generated in the reactor to the surrounding water.

There is a cold water inlet into the outer box and a steam outlet. As the cold water flows past the reactor, the cooling elements will heat it up and the flux of the water (e.g. liters/h) dictates the difference between in and out temperature. In this way hot water or steam can be produced.

What is The Rossi Effect?

Until the inventor Andrea Rossi  discovered the Rossi Effect there were basically only two categories of studied:

  1. Palladium – Deuterium
    (the original Cold Fusion process)
  2. Nickel – Hydrogen

The Rossi Effect is a completely new discovery in the field of technology and raises the available power density of processes several orders of magnitude to at least 10 kW/kg. With Power Densities this high most conventional Energy Applications have the potential of being replaced with an ECAT energy source.
